I don't always find new shows while they're still new, and I don't always watch them when I do, but when I do...
Daughter of Lupin is a Japanese live-action series you can watch on Amazon Prime, Asian Crush, or for free with adds on Tubi. It was released in 2021, but I finally got around to it last week. Daughter of Lupin is a romantic comedy following Hanna Mikumo, a librarian and member of the notorious L-Family, and Kazuma Sakuraba, her boyfriend and the latest in a long line of police officers - and their attempt to make their relationship work in spite of their differences.
Before I get into the nitty-gritty, there a couple of thing you should know. The first is that if you're looking for a live-action version of Lupi III, you're out of luck. The only thing the two have in common is that the L-Family is related to the famous gentleman burglar, Arsine Lupin. Secondly, if you don't like reading your voices and don't speak Japanese, this isn't the show for you. The series is in Japanese and hasn't been dubbed.
Now for the meat of the review.
If you like a good action movie or tear-jerker, this isn't it. It is pure camp. Think Addams Family meets 60's Batman meets Hudson Hawk, with a touch of The Sound of Music to round things out. The characters are pure stereotypes, the plot's predictable, the costumes are just as over the top as the fight scenes, the good guys always win the day, and there's even a character who talks through song. Yes, it's that bad. Don't believe me? Check out this clip from the movie:
It may be bad, but it's a good watch when you're not in the mood to think or need to cleanse your pallet after binge watching Yellowstone.
